New Game Lets You Build and Launch Rockets

NASA’s LSP and the Kennedy Information Technology Mobile Team have developed a game that allows players to build and fly their own rockets. Image Credit: NASA

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA is working to bring fans of space exploration who might be far away from Kennedy Space Center closer to the action. Dubbed “Rocket Science 101” the game, is available for either computers or for the iPad. For more fun games use the next link and play today..

Launches are managed at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida are managed under the Launch Services Program or LSP. LSP opens space up for the study of the Earth and the cosmos beyond. LSP is “virtually” handing off the responsibility of developing and launching rockets over to video game players and space enthusiasts. Personally I’m more of a fan of playing bingo for cash and other simple games, but this new game should provide the public with a real-world understanding of the thought processes involved in rocket science – via an entertaining game in the comfort of their own home.

The game allows players to select from three different skill levels and a variety of missions. Image Credit: NASA

To get players invested in the game they can select their favorite missions to work. Naturally players have varying levels of experience and the game is designed to accommodate them by having three different skill levels. The game helps educate the public by teaching them about the various components that incorporate a rocket and how these elements work together to send spacecraft into orbit. This is identical to the process that LSP engineers and other specialists do on a daily basis and thus allow the player to gain a deeper appreciation of the complexities of rocket science. For gamers this just lasts one gaming session. For engineers? It’s a period that can last years.  The game was developed by the Kennedy Information Technology Mobile Team in conjunction with LSP. Rocket Science 101 is available for iPad users via iTunes at: http://bit.ly/Mn1xLr

For aspiring rocket scientists this game allows players to test out their skills at being “steely-eyed missile men” or “steely-eyed missile women.” and is available on either your home computer or via the iPad. You can also try some new games at UFA888 ตัวแทนหลัก ที่ดีที่สุดในไทย.

  1. Great article. Thanks for letting us know where to find this. NASA’s website is huge and has so much data that it is nearly impossible to keep track of all the new developments going on. I think this game should be fun to try out.

  2. Exactly right Michael! NASA is an incredible force to inspire young people (and the not so young) to learn about space exploration, and to educate in the STEM disciplines that this country desperately needs if it hopes to survive in this increasingly more technologically complex world. NASA CORE (Catalog Of Resources for Educators) is a must see source of educational materials (including basil seeds flown to the ISS by the Shuttle, along with a packet of control non-space exposed seeds, free with shipping and handling, about $5.00). Young people love it! Thanks NASA for the GREAT Rocket Science 101 program. Here’s hoping that it inspires the next generation of von Braun’s!

  3. Thank you for mentioning NASA CORE to me Karol. I guess I hadn’t considered it to be of interest to me since I’m not in school, but I enjoy learning. Rather silly thinking huh? I appreciate your help.

  4. This is great! I’m glad NASA is taking advantage of the new technological possibilities of the iPad. This really will help people learn what really goes into the launches while also keeping the best part of the rockets, the fun!
