MERRITT ISLAND, Fla — Space Shirts announced the winner of the company’s Out-of-This-World T-Shirt Design Contest. The winner was Jerry Forney, a graphic artist who resides in Melbourne, Fla. Forney’s “Think Space” theme was a perfect match for the contest’s goals to support interest in space exploration and provide a fun opportunity for graphic artists and space enthusiasts.

Brenda Mulberry, Space Shirts founder, and Jason Rhian, editor of AmericaSpace.com, presented Mr. Forney with the grand prize of an iPad in a small ceremony at Space Shirts manufacturing plant and retail shop in Merritt Island, Fla., Saturday, April 20, 2013.

“We love Jerry’s artistic concept, which blends words and images that remind people of space exploration. Space Shirts’ T-shirt design contest was our way of honoring the efforts of the many space program astronauts, engineers, and administrators who constantly push the boundaries of our knowledge,” said Brenda Mulberry, founder of Space Shirts. “Now, we look forward to producing the new concept on screen-printed T-shirts and donating a share of sales proceeds to The Astronaut’s Memorial Foundation and The Center for Space Education. And we thank all the talented artists who submitted their designs to further interest in space exploration and help support a worthy cause.”

AmericaSpace assisted in promoting the event, and the website’s owner expressed his thoughts as to how contests like this could benefit space exploration efforts.

“AmericaSpace was founded to tell the space flight story, and what Jerry has produced helps inspire future generations of explorers. Simply put, we were honored to help support this effort,” said Jim Hillhouse, the founder and senior editor of AmericaSpace.

Forney, who worked for 18 years at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, was inspired to contribute to the space program. Forney is very familiar with graphics design, having owned Future Features Cartoon Syndicate, and he currently is the creative director at Storytree Productions.

“I dreamt of working on the Space Coast as a kid living in Pittsburgh who built models and drew pictures of rockets and spacemen in the late sixties,” Forney said. “One day, I finally got the chance to actually work at Kennedy Space Center as a graphic artist, a job that was immensely exciting and rewarding. Now I’ve been given the chance to put an exclamation point on my career with this design. Think Space!”
