SETI Detects No Alien Signals Coming from Strange Star, Continues Searching

The SETI Institute has recently undergone a search for alien radio signals around the star KIC 8462852, whose mysterious brightness fluctuations have been considered to be the workings of an extraterrestrial civilisation. Following a thoroiugh search in a wide range of frequencies, SETI reported that it has detected no such signals that could be of artificial origin. Image Credit: Graeme L. Astronomers Begin Woldwide Observations of 'Unusual' Star as SETI Listens for Alien Signals

Astronomers have begun a close-up study of the unusual star KIC 8462852 in the hopes of explaining Kepler's enigmatic observations. To that end, the American Association of Variable Star Observers recently issued a call to the astronomical community worldwide for more detailed observations, while the SETI Institute has began searching for possible radio signals of artificial origin in KIC 8462852's vicinity. There has been a lot of discussion during the past several days regarding a discovery by the Kepler Space Telescope, which, according to some, might be the first evidence for advanced extraterrestrial intelligence, or […]

Event Horizon Telescope Provides New Evidence for Existence of Black Holes

An artist's impression of a supermassive black hole. Astronomers believe that such objects lie at the centers of most galaxies in the Universe. A recent study which was undertaken with the help of the Event Horizon Telescope, has provided new indirect evidence that indeed this is the case. Image Credit: ESO/L. Calçada

Stellar (and Planetary) Formation Near Milky Way's Supermassive Black Hole Possible, New Study Suggests

An artist’s illustration of the vicinity of the supermassive black hole in the center of the Milky Way galaxy, known as Sagittarius A* . Astronomers have discovered a population of more than 150 massive young stars (shown as blue dots) in recent years that orbit within 2 light-years from the black hole. Newer observational […]

Astronomers Detect Complex Organics Around Nearby Young Star; Produce Them in Simulated Conditions in the Lab

Artist’s impression of the protoplanetary disk surrounding the young star MWC 480. Astronomers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, or ALMA, have detected the complex organic molecule methyl cyanide in the outer reaches of the star’s protoplanetary disk, where comets are believed to form. This discovery suggests that complex organic chemistry and potentially the […]

New Study Finds Unusual Mathematical Pattern in Cosmic Radio Bursts

A dramatic night-time image of the 64-m Parkes radio telescope in Australia, under the splenor of the Milky Way. The iconic telescope has detected during the last decade a total of 10 mysterious cosmic radio flashes, known as ‘fast radio bursts’. A new study now suggests that these astrophysical sources exhibit a surprising and […]

Astronomers Observe Cosmic Fast Radio Burst in Real Time, Yet Mystery of Their Origin Deepens

Detective novels aside, astronomy and astrophysics could well be considered as the next best occupation for anyone who loves […]

Astronomers Measure Galactic Winds at Milky Way's Center, Detect Record-Breaking X-Ray Flares From Its Supermassive Black Hole

A composite image of the area around the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, known as Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), taken with NASA’s Chandra X-ray space telescope. The colors in the main image represent medium, and high-energy X-rays as red, green, and blue respectively. The inset box shows a giant […]

New Research Suggests Potential Link Between Neutrinos and the Supermassive Black Hole at Milky Way's Center

An unprecedented view of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way Galaxy, known as Sagittarius A*, that was obtained with NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory. A new study has provided evidence that Sagittarius A* is a source of high-energy neutrinos. Image Credit: NASA/CXC/Univ. of Wisconsin/Y.Bai. et al.
