AmericaSpace Partner's Image of Venus Transit Selected by NASA APOD

Photo Credit: Chris Hetlage / Imaging the Cosmos

AmericaSpace partner Chris Hetlage took this stunning picture of the transit of Venus in front of the Sun on June 5, 2012. The image was of such high quality that NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day (NASA APOD) selected it for their June 7, 2012 image.

Congratulations Chris on the capture of what is without doubt one of the finest images of the event. Excellent work that will be enjoyed well into the time of the next transit of Venus. This is particularly uplifting in light of the cancellation of the GEMS mission and doubt as to the ability of NASA to re-purpose the KH-11 telescopes donated by the Pentagon due to lack of funds. Then, as reported in AIAA Daily Launch: “The Southwest Research Institute is sponsoring bake sales and car washes to help raise awareness of the cuts to NASA in the proposed 2013 budget.” Selling cookies and cupcakes “to salvage US planetary science projects” . . . oy vey . Thank you for the beautiful image Chris. May it inspire a new generation of astrophysicists and astronomers!
