As we marvel at the amazing imagery coming back from NASA’s Mars Science Laboratory rover ‘Curiosity’ – we wanted to highlight the now-silent rover Spirit’s launch from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 17 (SLC-17) in Florida on June 10, 2003. Spirit’s sister, Opportunity continues to explore her patch of the Red Planet.

The Unrealised I’s: NASA’s Would-Be Lunar Missions

The extended robotic arm of NASA's Mars rover Curiosity can be seen in this mosaic of full-resolution images from Curiosity's Navigation camera (Navcam). The 7-foot-long (2.1-meter-long) arm maneuvers a turret of tools including a camera, a drill, a spectrometer, a scoop and mechanisms for sieving and portioning samples of powdered rock and soil.
