Light the Candles: Happy Birthday wishes going out to space shuttle veteran and former Kennedy Space Center Director Bob Crippen, who was born in 1937. The four-time space shuttle astronaut was pilot aboard the first shuttle mission in 1981, and then commanded STS-7, STS-41-C, and STS-41G. Photo shows Crippen in a T-38 arriving at Patrick Air Force Base in 1981, prior to the STS-1 mission aboard Space Shuttle Columbia. Crippen became an astronaut in 1969 as a member of NASA’s seventh group of astronauts.

  1. Happy Birthday to one of our hero’s. Wish I still worked on the program. It has been hard letting go.
