The Chandra X-Ray Observatory, NASA’s space telescope which observes the universe using X-rays, has now completed its 15th year of operations, and astronomers are celebrating the anniversary with a series of special images from the orbiting observatory.
This composite image from the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) showing approximately 10,000 galaxies in brilliant color took nine years to assemble, and sheds light upon star formation in our Universe. Image Credit: NASA/ESA
NASA and the European Space Agency’s Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has done it again—this time, in brilliant color. A newly released [...]
The Very Large Array of radiotelescopes in Socorro, N.M. Radiotelescopes are being used for more than half a century in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. Is this means of communication also employed by other intelligent civilisations, and, if so, could we understand and perceive their presence? Image of gravitational waves in the cosmic microwave background, which appear as twisting “curls” and are known as B-nodes, as observed by the BICEP2 telescope. Image Credit: BICEP2 Collaboration
Astronomers today announced an exciting discovery: the first direct evidence for what happened during the first few seconds or so of the birth of our [...]
The amazing mirrors that will fly aboard NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will allow the James Webb Space Telescope to see farther away and further back in time to detect the light from the very first and most distant stars and galaxies. In this photo, an engineer’s crystal clear reflection is seen on the [...]
The European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) in Darmstadt, Germany, will bid a fond farewell to the GOCE and Planck missions this week. Both missions have contributed enormously to our understanding of Earth and the Universe. Photo Credit: ESOC
Two ambitious science missions—one circling Earth closer than any other research satellite, the other orbiting [...]

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope recently provided the strongest evidence yet that short-duration gamma ray bursts are produced by the merger of two small, super-dense stellar objects.

Recent findings from the European Space Agency’s Planck spacecraft have provided some minor revisions to the currently accepted parameters of the universe. As well as it now being 13.8 billion years old, the distribution [...]
The principal investigator on the AMS-2 experiment on the International Space Station has suggested that the first findings from the AMS-2 suggest that dark matter could be a reality. Photo Credit: NASA
NASA held a news conference to detail the first findings of the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer 2 (AMS-2) that was delivered to the [...]
This new image of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) 2012 campaign reveals a previously unseen population of seven faraway galaxies, which are observed as they appeared in a period 350 million to 600 million years after the big bang. Credit: NASA, ESA, R. Ellis (Caltech), and the UDF 2012 Team
