As covered by CNN, the EPOXI spacecraft has just had the closest encounter ever with a comet after passing with 435 miles of Comet Hartley 2.
In 2005, NASA’s EPOXI launched an 800-pound projectile into Comet Temple 1 in an effort to study its contents. EPOXI is the first spacecraft to have visited two comets.
