As part of the 50th Anniversary of President John F. Kennedy’s May 25, 196l speech that began our race to the Moon, Dr. Buzz Aldrin, Apollo 11 Lunar Module Pilot delivered a keynote speech at ceremonies at the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston today, May 25th.

Buzz calls for a bipartisan, enduring goal, with the requisite commitment for space that will inspire nation, build upon basis of continue international leadership in space and provide focus for people who will be entrusted to carry this out. This will require courageous leadership to set a clear goal, destination, and schedule. A founding principle framing this goal would be a declaration to continue American leadership in space to lead to the expansion of humans in the cosmos. Buzz would like to see a permanent human outpost on Mars by 2035. There should be a flexible path using the capabilities we develop for longer-term goal of expanding reach of LEO. There should be missions to astroids and near-earth objects. Buzz also calls for the use of Earth-Mars cyclers.
