NASA’s Associate Administrator for Science, Ed Weiler, retiring

Ed Weiler, a NASA veteran with nearly 33 years with the space agency will be leaving NASA on Sept. 30. Weiler worked in NASA’s science exploration programs. 

In his most recent position Weiler served as associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. In this capacity Weiler directed a wide range of science programs in Earth science, heliophysics, planetary science and astrophysics. Chuck Gay, who was serving as the directorate’s deputy associate administrator, will become the acting associate administrator until a replacement can be found. 

“Ed leaves an enduring legacy of pride and success that forever will remain a part of NASA’s science history,” NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. “His leadership helped inspire the public with each new scientific discovery, and enabled NASA to move forward with new capabilities to continue to explore our solar system and beyond.” 

Weiler’s departure from NASA comes at a time when many within the space agency are leaving NASA. NASA’s Chief Technologist – Bobby Braun, Safety Chief Bryan O’Connor and Exploration Associate Administrator have all either left or announced their intent to do so. 

Weiler was in charge of a number of highly successful endeavors for the agency including, the great observatory missions, unprecedented advances in Earth science and missions to other planets in our solar system.
