Work is Done: Engineers at the Kennedy Space Center begin inspecting one of the solid rocket boosters that launched STS-8 and Space Shuttle Challenger into orbit on Aug. 30, 1983, from Launch Pad 39A. The two spent boosters were recovered in the Atlantic Ocean soon after launch and then towed back to Port Canaveral. The SRBs would be refurbished and eventually used again.
