Launch of ICON on a Pegasus XL rocket from Cape Canaveral AFB, FL launch complex Skid Strip
Launch scheduled for 11 Oct 19 at 1:30 GMT
Local time 10 Oct 19 at 9:30pm Eastern

A Pegasus XL rocket will be launched from NASA's Stargazer L-1011 aircraft in mid air at 39,000ft. Pegasus XL is a winged, three-stage solid propellant rocket built by Northrop Grumman that will launch the ICON satellite into low earth orbit.

The Ionospheric Connection Explorer (ICON) will study the frontier of space: the dynamic zone high in our atmosphere where terrestrial weather from below meets space weather above. In this region, the tenuous gases are anything but quiet, as a mix of neutral and charged particles travel through in giant winds. These winds can change on a wide variety of time scales -- due to Earth's seasons, the day's heating and cooling, and incoming bursts of radiation from the sun.
