KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, Fla – A body has been discovered on Kennedy Space Center (KSC) property inside of a car. The body was located at Dummitt Cove which is inside of the space center’s property. This part of KSC is just off of Courtenay Parkway, just north of where Kennedy Parkway intersects with the Max Brewer Memorial.

The body was found at approximately 10 a.m. EDT Tuesday, Aug. 16. It has not been released who initially discovered the body, but Brevard County Fire-Rescue crews and Florida Fish and Wildlife crews responded to the scene.

“NASA Emergency Medical Services and security responded to a report of a non-responsive male in a car,” said NASA’s News Chief at Kennedy Space Center Allard Beutel. “The body was found outside of the gates of KSC, but still on NASA property. Although NASA will conduct its own investigation, this has been turned over to the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office.”

Sheriff’s officials have just started their investigation but have stated that the body was that of a 50-year-old homeless man that appears to have died of natural causes. His name has yet to be released upon notification of his next-of-kin.

Kennedy Space Center covers a vast section of what is now known as Florida’s Space Coast. The space center also contains the Merritt Island National Wildlife Preserve, all total it is 34 miles (55 km) long and approximately 6 miles (10 km) wide, covering a total of about 219 square miles.

KSC has witnessed an uptick in deadly and criminal activity during the past two years. Cocaine has been discovered twice at the space center and a worker committed suicide by jumping to his death March 14 from Launch Complex 39A.
