TOMORROW: Bishop to Join in Calling on NASA Administrator Bolden to Address the Future of the Manned Space Program
WASHINGTON, D.C.— Tomorrow, Congressman Rob Bishop (R-UT) along with Ranking Member of the Commerce, Justice and Science Subcommittee on Appropriations Rep. Frank Wolf (R-VA), Rep. John Culberson (R-TX) and Rep. Pete Olson (R-TX) are scheduled to hold a press conference giving NASA Administrator Bolden 30 days to explain how he plans to save the manned space program.
“The President’s plans to transfer funding from NASA’s current human space flight program over to some unknown and unproven entities almost guarantees that our country will fall behind in space and missile defense capabilities, which is why I am hopeful that Administrator Bolden will choose to place the interests of this country before the Administration’s political agenda,” said Congressman Bishop. “After all, it was the President himself who said that ‘We cannot cede our leadership in space.’ That is exactly what is going to happen if the Constellation program is cancelled.”
In an effort to bring greater clarity and understanding to the President’s budget request for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Exploration Program and subsequent plans to cancel the Constellation program and Ares rocket, Congressman Bishop will join in calling on NASA Administrator Charles Bolden to appoint a team of NASA experts to review how exploration spacecraft and launch vehicle development and testing may be maintained within the proposed budget request to ensure uninterrupted, independent U.S. human space flight access to the International Space Station and beyond. The team should report back within 30 days in order to provide the administration and Congress with this necessary information – before the President’s space summit in Florida on April 15.
