Dragon Freedom Splashes Down, Wraps Up Six-Month Crew-4 Mission

After almost six months in orbit, Dragon Freedom and the Crew-4 astronauts are safely home, having splashed down near Jacksonville, off the Florida Coast at 4:55 p.m. EDT Friday. Commander Kjell Lindgren, Pilot Bob “Farmer” Hines and Mission Specialist Jessica Watkins of NASA, together with Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti—who became the first European woman to command the International Space Station (ISS)—logged more than 170 days in orbit, spanning a research-packed Expedition 67 and 68.

A new crew of astronauts is on their way to the International Space Station today, following their successful launch with SpaceX early this morning from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Liftoff occurred at 3:52am EDT, sending Commander Kjell Lindgren, Pilot Bob “Farmer” Hines, Jessica Watkins and Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti on the first leg of their 6-month “Crew 4” mission.

Crew-4 Aims for Pre-Dawn Wednesday Launch to Space Station

In the final days of the year’s fourth month, an international crew of four men and women, atop a four-times-flown Falcon 9 booster and riding the brand-new Dragon Freedom are set to begin the fourth crew-carrying mission of the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) in Wednesday’s pre-dawn darkness. Commander Kjell Lindgren and Pilot Bob “Farmer” Hines, joined by fellow NASA flyer Jessica Watkins and record-setting Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti will launch from historic Pad 39A at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida at 3:52 a.m. EDT to kick off a day-long chasedown of the International Space Station (ISS). They are expected to remain aboard the sprawling orbital lab through September as part of Expedition 67.

Crew-4 Launch Delayed Until Ax-1 Returns from Space Station

Windy weather this week in Florida has prevented the Axiom Mission 1 (Ax-1) crew from leaving the International Space Station, forcing NASA and SpaceX to delay launching Crew-4 to the station until at least Wednesday, April 27.

Dubbed ’Crew 4’, the mission is set to blast off from pad 39A on a SpaceX Crew Dragon and Falcon 9 rocket on April 23 at 5:26 a.m. EDT.

Watkins Assigned to Crew-4 Mission, As SLS Prepares to Roll

As NASA announced Tuesday that it will roll the first Space Launch System (SLS) super-heavylift booster out to historic Pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida, for fit-checks later this winter, the agency also assigned “Artemis Team” astronaut Jessica Watkins as a crew member on the next scheduled Crew Dragon rotation mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

SpaceX’s second mission of June and its shortest-ever turnaround between reflights of payload fairing halves was successfully completed late Tuesday, as one of its most seasoned Falcon 9 boosters roared uphill laden with additional Starlink internet communications satellites. Veteran B1067—making her fifth launch of the year and the 20th of her career since June 2021—rose from storied Space Launch Complex (SLC)-40 at Florida’s Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, at 10:16 p.m. EDT, as attention now turns to Wednesday’s scheduled midday liftoff of a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Atlas V from neighboring SLC-41 and the long-awaited Crew Flight Test (CFT) of Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner.

May “may” only be a couple of days young, but SpaceX has successfully flown as many Falcon 9 missions as the month is old, following a pair of back-to-back launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Fla. A spectacular mid-morning liftoff of a third 20-times-flown booster carrying Maxar’s first pair of WorldView Legion geospatial imaging satellites from the West Coast at 11:36 a.m. PDT Thursday was followed eight hours later at 10:37 p.m. EDT by another veteran rocket laden with the year’s 30th batch of Starlink internet communications satellites bound for low-Earth orbit.

After completing two stunning back-to-back months with 12 Falcon 9 missions apiece, SpaceX kicked off May in fine style with Thursday morning’s launch and landing of a fleet-leading booster out of Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif. Veteran B1061 took flight from the mountain-ringed West Coast launch site’s Space Launch Complex (SLC)-4E at 11:36 a.m. PDT carrying the inaugural pair of WorldView Legion geospatial imaging satellites to Sun-synchronous orbit and became the third member of SpaceX’s fleet in less than three weeks to reach a 20th mission.

SpaceX Wraps Up 12-Mission March, Misses Breaking Records

SpaceX has triumphantly closed out March as its first calendar month to feature an 11th and 12th Falcon 9 mission. Following Saturday’s on-time 5:52 p.m. EDT liftoff of the 12-times-used B1076 and the successful deployment of the 11,000-pound (5,000-kilogram) Eutelsat 36D geostationary communications satellite for the Paris, France-based Eutelsat Consortium, another pair of boosters were set to fly from opposing coasts of the United States laden with dozens more Starlink internet satellites for emplacement into low-Earth orbit.

But due to unfavorable weather conditions at Vandenberg Space Force Base, Calif., teams elected to stand down from the third mission of the evening, eliminating an opportunity to conclude March by setting new empirical records—for the second time this month—for the shortest interval between a pair of launches and between a trio of launches.
