Almost 37 years to-the-day that the first collaborative mission between the United States and (Soviet Union at that time) Russia – a crew consisting of a Russian cosmonaut, Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut and U.S. astronaut thundered off of the steppes of Kazakhstan from the Baikonur Cosmodrome atop a Russian Soyuz rocket. Launch occurred at 10:40 p.m. EDT July 14, 2012 headed toward the International Space Station (ISS).
The crew consists of U.S. astronaut Sunita Williams, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko and JAXS astronaut Akihiko Hoshide. They will serve as flight engineers 3-5 respectively on the Expedition 32 crew. They will join the other members of the Expedition 32 crew, Commander Gennady Padalka and Flight Engineers U.S. astronaut Joe Acaba and Russian cosmonaut Sergei Revin , who are already on board the ISS.
Docking is currently slated to take place on the Rassvet module of the space station at 12:52 a.m. EDT Tuesday, July 17 at 12:15 a.m., EDT. It can be viewed live on NASA Television.
The crew of six will serve aboard the space station for about two months and are slated to return home on Sept. 17.
The Apollo-Soyuz Test Project or ASTP launched on July 15, 1975. The U.S. half launched atop a Saturn IB rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and the Soviet half of the historic mission lifted off using a Soyuz rocket.
